On Sunday, Lewis Hamilton won his eighth British Grand Prix after fighting back from a 10-second penalty for a first-lap collision and overtaking Charles Leclerc late in the last two laps.
Highlights
Verstappen had a great start to a race with a 33-point lead and was on the verge of a fourth successive win. But he failed to complete a lap and was left with zero points. Verstappen suffered an accident with Hamilton as he crashed out at Copse corner and was sent to hospital for checks. Hamilton was given a 10-second time penalty for causing a collision.
Despite the 10-second penalty, Hamilton chased down Leclerc and claimed his 99th race victory, with the Briton’s Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas finishing third.
Hamilton secured his 172nd podium and seventh of the season. He now has 177 points just behind Verstappen leads the chart with 185 points. Hamilton also won his fourth race in 2021 and his first since the Spanish GP win.
“This is a dream for me today, to do it in front of you all”, said Hamilton after the win
“I always try to be measured in how I approach, particularly with battling with Max, he’s very aggressive. And then today I was fully alongside him and he didn’t leave space. Regardless of whether I agree with the penalty, I take it on the chin and I just kept working. I was like I’m not going to let anything get in the way of the crowd’s enjoyment of the weekend and the national anthem and the British flag.”
Red Bull boss Christian Horner said: “Lewis Hamilton is a world champion and he shouldn’t be making maneuvers like that. It’s unacceptable. Max is having to go to the hospital for precautionary checks after a 51G accident so I hope Lewis is very happy with himself. For me, that’s a hollow victory. “Everyone who’s driven that corner knows you don’t stick a wheel up the inside at Copse. He’s put him in the fence. Thank god he’s not been hurt. It was a desperate move.”
“It’s difficult to enjoy 100 percent. Of course, it’s been an incredible race, I gave not 100 percent, but I gave 200 percent. I gave all of me.” Leclerc said after his second-place finish.
