According to NBC News, the new Kobe Bryant statue outside Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles will be modified after several spelling errors were detected in the engraving encircling the sculpture’s base.
Basketball reporter Dre Voigt shared photos of spelling errors he spotted on the statue honoring the Los Angeles Lakers icon, which depicts a box score from Bryant’s 81-point performance against the Toronto Raptors in 2006. It also contains spelling errors in the names of Jose Calderon and Von Wafer on a replica box score of the statue. Wafer’s first name is spelled “Vom” instead of “Von,” and the word “decision” is similarly misspelled. Calderon’s last name is “Calderson.” The list of Kobe Bryant’s career accomplishments has been formatted incorrectly on another side of the base.

“We have been aware of this for a few weeks and are already working to get it corrected soon,” he stated in an email. The 19-foot, 4,000-pound bronze statue was unveiled on February 8 to honor his number 8 jersey. This is one of three planned tributes to the five-time NBA champion. Kobe Bryant died in a helicopter crash in January 2020, along with his daughter Gianna and seven others. His wife, Vanessa, indicated that the two other monuments will show the father-daughter pair, and the other will have the basketball player in his number 24 jersey.
