Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) emerged victorious in the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL), securing their third title. Led by Shreyas Iyer, KKR triumphed over Sunrisers Hyderabad in a thrilling final at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on May 26. Previously, KKR had won the championship in 2012 and 2014.
Shreyas Iyer’s unique achievement
KKR captain Shreyas Iyer made history by becoming the first player to lead multiple teams to IPL finals. Before joining KKR, Iyer led Delhi Capitals (DC) to their first-ever final in 2020, where they lost to Mumbai Indians. Overall, Iyer is the fifth player to reach multiple IPL finals as a captain.

SRH’s historic totals
Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) set a new benchmark by posting three 250+ totals in a single IPL season, including the highest-ever total in franchise cricket: 287/3 against Royal Challengers Bangalore. They also scored 277/3 against Mumbai Indians and 266/7 against Delhi Capitals. KKR also impressed with a 272/7 score against Delhi Capitals.
Most sixes in a season
The 2024 IPL season saw an unprecedented 1,260 sixes, the highest in any season. The 1,000-six milestone was reached in just 57 games, a record pace. Previous seasons with over 1,000 sixes were 2023 (1,124 sixes) and 2022 (1,062 sixes).
Surge in centuries
Fourteen centuries were scored in the 2024 season, the highest in IPL history. Notable centurions included Jos Buttler (2), Will Jacks, Jonny Bairstow, Suryakumar Yadav, and Virat Kohli. The only other season with over 10 centuries was 2022, which saw 12 centuries.
Highest successful run-chases
The season featured two of the top three highest successful run-chases in T20 history. Punjab Kings achieved the highest-ever successful chase by scoring 262 against KKR. Rajasthan Royals matched their own record by chasing down 224 against KKR, the second-highest successful chase in IPL history.
Record sixes
The match between Punjab Kings and KKR recorded 42 sixes, the highest in any T20 match. Matches between SRH and MI, and RCB and SRH also saw high six counts, with 38 each. The SRH-RCB game in Bengaluru set a new record for aggregate runs in a T20 match, with 549 runs.

Virat Kohli became the first player to surpass 8,000 runs in IPL history and also hit his eighth century.
Chahal’s bowling record
Yuzvendra Chahal reached his 200th wicket, becoming the first bowler to achieve this milestone in the IPL.

MS Dhoni became the first player to achieve 150 wins in IPL history, thrilling fans with his performances in the death overs.
Gaikwad’s captaincy feat
Ruturaj Gaikwad became the first Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain to score a century.
