Jhulan Goswami makes history, becomes first women’s player to take 250 ODI wickets

Jhulan Goswami

Women can create history too and this is what India’s Jhulan Goswami did. Jhulan Goswami, in the world cup game against England on March 16, 2022, embedded her name in history by becoming the first-ever women’s player to take 250 wickets in ODIs. Jhulan set the record against England at Mount Maunganui’s Bay Oval. She got India off to a flying start in the second innings by dismissing English opener Tammy Beaumont.

Jhulan delivered an outside off-stump delivery to the right-hander that nibbled back into her pads. The umpire didn’t seem convinced, so he ruled in Beaumont’s favor. The Indian team, on the other hand, re-examined the ruling, which was subsequently ruled out. The Indian pacer has an unmatchable legacy in the limited-overs format. Cathryn Fitzpatrick of Australia and Anisa Mohammed of the West Indies are also seventy wickets behind her. With 180 ODI wickets between them, the players are in second place.

Ellyse Perry calls Jhulan Goswami’s contributions ‘unbelievable’

Jhulan Goswami also became the first woman to take 350 international wickets with this achievement. In a 20-year international career, she has 44 Test, 56 T20I, and 250 ODI wickets to her credit. Even though she achieved this feat, unfortunately, it wasn’t enough for the team. Team India lost this game against England. Jhulan Goswami became the first cricketer to pick 40 wickets in Women’s World Cups alone, surpassing Australia’s Lyn Fullston, earlier in the ICC Women’s World Cup 2022 event. The Australian captain, Ellyse Perry, was full of respect for the renowned Indian cricketer. Jhulan’s contribution to the game was described as “unbelievable” by her.

“I think not just myself, but our entire team has a tremendous level of respect for Jhulan. You know, what she’s done for the game, not just for the Indian team, the whole of women’s cricket globally is just unbelievable. I certainly admire her longevity as well, and just how successful she’s been over such a long period,” Ellyse Perry had said.

Goswami took her 250th ODI wicket by trapping Beaumont in front of the stumps. India, on the other hand, had a lackluster performance with the bat in the game. They were out for 134 in 36.2 overs. Smriti Mandhana was the saving grace with 35 runs. Team India now has 2 wins and 2 losses in the tournament so far.
