Is Bezos selling Washington Post to buy an NFL team?

Following news reports of Jeff Bezos selling the American newspaper, Washington Post, sources close to the founder revealed Bezos denied having such plans. In a conversation with CNN, the source revealed Bezos denied plans of selling the paper in a meeting with senior staff. Additionally, the Amazon founder also visited the newsroom and interacted with staff.

The news came to light after a report by New York Post revealing Bezos is likely to sell Washington Post and buy Washington Commanders, the football team. Bezos bought the newspaper company in 2013 for a total of $250 million. Since then, its business has drastically evolved. However, despite the denial, Bezos has publically shared his love for the NFL team before. When asked if he is looking to buy the team, he stated “Yes, I’ve heard that buzz”. Additionally, he said that he “grew up in Houston, Texas, and I played football growing up as a kid”. “It is my favorite sport. So we’ll just have to wait and see,” he added in the interview.

As per earlier reports, with the bleak global economic outlook, Amazon is planning to lay off over 18,000 employees. Other major companies such as Microsoft, Meta, and Twitter have mass lay-offs in process. “Amazon has weathered uncertain and difficult economies in the past, and we will continue to do so. These changes will help us pursue our long-term opportunities with a stronger cost structure,” stated Andy Jassy earlier this month. Jassy is the Chief Executive Officer of Amazon.
