India vs England: India record their lowest score in England since 1952

India was bundled out for just 78 runs on the opening day of the third Test against England at Leeds on Wednesday. This was India’s third-lowest Test innings score in England. England bowlers produced a great display of swing bowling as India’s batsmen suffered an embarrassing collapse at Headingley on Day 1.

Indian skipper Virat Kohli won the toss and elected to bat first, but he may be regretting his decision as England got off to a flying start dismissing the opener KL Rahul in the very first over. India was 56 for 4 at lunch and then lost their last five wickets for just 11 runs. Rohit Sharma (19) and Ajinkya Rahane (18) were the only batsmen to reach the double-digit score from India.

Veteran pacer James Anderson ripped through Indian top order in his opening spell. The 39-year-old bowled 8 overs, dismissed three batsmen giving away just 6 runs. Craig Overton (3/14) claimed three wickets, while Ollie Robinson (2/16) and Sam Curran (2/21) took two each as the England bowlers wreaked havoc on the visitors.

Here’s a statistical summary of India’s dismal performance at Leeds on Day 1

1. It was India’s lowest Test total against England since being dismissed for 42 at Lord’s in 1974.

2. It was India’s ninth all-time lowest score in Tests.

3. The total was India’s third-lowest in Test matches played in England.

4. It was also the third-lowest score for India while batting first after winning the toss in a Test.

5. Virat Kohli got out to James Anderson for the seventh time in Tests. The England pacer now joins Nathan Lyon for dismissing Kohli most times in the format.
