It’s time for cricket fans to get excited because there’s a chance that cricket may now be a part of the Olympics. Though there isn’t any official decision made about the same, ICC has been invited by the Olympics Committee. The invitation is to propose a case for the inclusion of Cricket in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
In addition, cricket will contend for incorporation alongside other sports. It includes breakdancing (World DanceSport Federation), baseball/softball (WBSC), flag football (IFAF), lacrosse (World Lacrosse), karate (WKF), and others. Prior to the International Olympic Committee session in Mumbai in mid-2023, there will be an ultimate call on this. This year, the Commonwealth Games have included the women’s T20 to be part of tournament. In a multi-sport competition like the CWG, this is only the second time the sport has participated.
Cricket may be one of the nine sports in the 2028 Olympics
Geoff Allardice, the chief executive of the ICC, has stated that they are eager about taking part in the multi-sport event in LA28. They are giving the organizers all the content for the analysis regarding their participation. “We have declared the ambition to be involved in the Olympic Games. We are assisting the LA28 organizers and providing them with the information for their assessment of different sports in regard to the addition to the Olympic program. There is not much to report at this stage other than the fact we are assisting the LA28 organizers,” the ICC chief said.
Although the LA28 does not require to introduce new sports, it is evaluating all of them. This is in order to attain its target of 10,500 athletes competing in the Olympics.
