Pele, the 82-year-old football great from Brazil, was placed in “end-of-life” or “palliative care” after his colon cancer treatment stopped working, according to Folha de S. Paulo. Patients with potentially fatal diseases or conditions receive palliative care instead of intrusive testing or therapy. This sort of treatment primarily aims to reduce illness-related symptoms and stress.
Superstar Kylian Mbappe of France’s national team used Twitter to send the Brazilian his best wishes. Pray for the King, Mbappe tweeted.
Edson Arantes do Nascimento, better known as Pele, was hospitalized to the Albert Einstein Hospital in Sao Paulo, Brazil, on Tuesday for a “re-evaluation” of the chemotherapy he has been receiving since having surgery to remove a colon tumor in September 2021.
Pele’s condition is stable: Hospital bulletin
Pele’s status was stable, the hospital reported in a medical update on Thursday.
“He is stable and his health is showing general improvement. (He) will remain in the hospital in the coming days to continue treatment,” read the bulletin. After that, Pele thanked the well-wishers for their notes in an Instagram post.
“It’s always nice to receive positive messages like this. Thanks to Qatar for this tribute, and to everyone who sends me good vibes!” wrote Pele.
At the tender age of 17, Pele earned his senior debut for Brazil against bitter rivals Argentina. He went on to help Brazil win the FIFA World Cup three times in 1958, 1962, and 1970. He won the title of tournament player in the 1970 edition.
