A former NFL player was reported missing and his mother was discovered dead in a suspected homicide after family members notified Illinois authorities they couldn’t reach either family member on Saturday. Local media said that former professional football player Sergio Brown, 35, and his mother Myrtle Brown, 73, went missing on Saturday. Myrtle Brown was discovered dead next to a creek behind her home after a search for the two was initiated, according to investigators, WGN-TV reported.
The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office determined that her death was the result of homicide.
According to officials, she apparently passed away from numerous wounds tied to an assault.
The deceased victim’s sister, Sheila Simmons, informed WGN-TV that she last spoke to her on Thursday. She learned that Myrtle and Sergio Brown were missing early on Saturday.
“We’re going to find out what happened because it’s not normal for my sister to not answer her phone, not to respond to text messages. People have been reaching out to her since Friday. No one was able to reach her,” Simmons told the station.
“Now, I got the call this morning saying that she’s missing, so immediately I came out here and found out my sister is dead.”
Sergio Brown played in 94 games for several teams
Former safety Sergio Brown played in 94 games for the New England Patriots, Indianapolis Colts, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Buffalo Bills, among other teams.
He participated in the league from 2010 until 2016.
The Notre Dame alum played high school basketball at the Proviso East High School in Chicago.
According to the Chicago Tribune, Sergio’s brother, Nick Brown, pleaded with him to return home in a Facebook post.
Nick Brown commented, “I want him to know that I love him and please come home.”
