Former England, Derbyshire, and Nottinghamshire pacer Mike Hendrick has passed away, on Tuesday (July 27), at the age of 72. He had been suffering from bowel and liver cancer for a while.
“Derbyshire County Cricket Club is deeply saddened by the news of the death of Mike Hendrick, one of the county’s finest post-war cricketers,” Cricket Derbyshire said in a statement.
Test Career
Mike Hendrick represented England in 30 Tests. He has 87 test wickets by his name at an impressive average of 25.83. Hendrick’s career-best spell of 4/28 came against India in 1974 during the 3rd Test in Birmingham. The right arm-pacer was also a part of the Ashes-winning side in 1977 and 1978/79. Mike’s most memorable performance came in Ashes 1977 where he claimed 8/95 to help England regain the urn. He also held the world record for most Test wickets without a five-wicket haul.
A look at Hendrick’s ODI numbers
The Derbyshire seamer has also played 22 ODIs for England. He claimed 35 scalps with a best of 5/31 in ODI cricket. He played a huge role in England’s 1979 World Cup Campaign where they reached the final of the tournament. But eventually, they lost to Clive Llyod led West Indies side in the finals. He was the leading wicket-taker in the tournament, finishing with 10 wickets in five matches at an average of 14.90.
He represented Derbyshire County Cricket Club. In 267 first-class matches. Mike Hendrick took 770 wickets at an average of 20.50. He claimed 30 five-wicket hauls and three 10-wicket hauls in FC cricket. In List A cricket, he finished with 297 wickets in 226 matches at 19.59. Hendrick was also the first professional coach of Ireland in 1995. He later joined Derbyshire as their bowling coach.
