Argentine defender Nichola Otamendi recorded a video of the team singing and dancing in the locker room as they celebrated their World Cup victory. When Martinez interrupted a planned stop with the cry, “For Mbappe who is dead!” the team could be heard chanting “a minute’s silence for” in unison.
Since the video has gone viral on social media, many fans have criticized Martinez for taking the unneeded action of ruining an otherwise happy event. While the Argentine appeared to be mocking Mbappe in the video, another showed him approaching the French striker to comfort him after the game.

After the game ended 3-3 after extra time, Argentina defeated France 4-2 on penalties. Mbappe saved his penalty kick, but his teammates Kingsley Coman and Aurelien Tchouameni were unable to score as Martinez guided Argentina to the elusive World Cup victory.
However, if not for Mbappe, Argentina would have won the game before the end of regulation. Mbappe scored twice in a span of 97 seconds to put France back in the game by kicking the ball past Martinez and into the Argentine goal.
In extra time, he defeated Martinez’s goal once more to send the contest to penalties.
