Argentina football captain Lionel Messi’s teammate and striker, Angel Di Maria, got a threat at his family home on the outskirts of Rosario during an outbreak of drug-related violence in the city. This development comes just a week after Di Maria stated that he wants to complete his playing career at his hometown club, Rosario Central.
“Tell your son Angel not to come back to Rosario because we will kill a family member”
On Tuesday (March 26), the 36-year-old will start in a friendly match between Argentina and Costa Rica at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. “Tell your son Angel not to come back to Rosario because we will kill a family member,” the message read, according to the news portal Infobae, which cited police sources. “Not even Pullaro is going to save you,” it added, directing to the provincial governor named Maximiliano Pullaro. “We don’t leave paper notes. We leave bullets and dead people behind.”
According to media sources, the purpose behind the threat calls remains unclear. Police, on the other hand, have stayed silent and have not responded to a Reuters email seeking additional information on the subject.
This is not the first time an Argentine footballer has faced such a threat. Argentina’s World Cup-winning captain Messi received a warning in 2023, followed by an attack by unidentified shooters on a supermarket belonging to the family of his wife Antonella Roccuzzo.
