On Saturday, Grant Wahl died after falling during the quarter-final match between the Netherlands and Argentina.
On Saturday, leading American sports writer Grant Wahl died after falling during the quarter-final match between the Netherlands and Argentina. The 48-year-old was alleged to have slumped back in his seat at Lusail Iconic Stadium and was treated by medical personnel who did CPR and used an automatic chest compressor before his death was announced due to a heart attack.
Wahl was covering his eighth World Cup and revealed on Monday, about a week before his death, that he had visited a hospital in Qatar because he was feeling ill. His brother, Eric, claims the journalist was slain because of his comments about the Qatari regime’s controversial attitude toward LGBT rights.
Earlier in the competition, Wahl was turned away from a stadium because he was wearing a rainbow T-shirt. “My name is Eric Wahl,” his brother claimed in an Instagram video that has since been deleted.
“I’m the reason he wore the rainbow shirt to the World Cup. My brother was healthy. He told me he received death threats. I do not believe my brother just died. I believe he was killed. And I just beg for any help.”
Grant’s body scheduled to be flown back to the United States for an autopsy
Wahl’s body is scheduled to be flown back to the United States on Monday and an autopsy will be performed to ascertain the cause of death. FIFA president Gianni Infantino responded to the news of his death by saying: “It is with disbelief and immense sadness that I have been made aware of the passing of renowned sports journalist Grant Wahl while reporting on a quarter-final match during the FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
Grant was recently honored by FIFA and AIPS for his contributions to reporting on eight consecutive FIFA World Cups, and his career also included attendance at multiple FIFA Women’s World Cups and a slew of other international sporting events. His passion for football was contagious, and his reporting will be missed by all who follow the game throughout the world.
“On behalf of FIFA and the football community, we express our sincerest condolences to his wife Celine, his family, and his friends at this most difficult time.”
