England was awarded a penalty kick in extra time when Raheem Sterling was brought down by Joakim Maehle. One of the unusual incidents happened as soon as Kane geared up to take the penalty. An unknown fan pointed a laser on the Denmark goalkeeper’s face from somewhere in the crowd.
Despite the interference, Schmeichel saved Kane’s penalty in the first attempt but the forward converted it into a goal in the rebound, as England claimed a 2-1 win and reached the finals of a major tournament for the first time since 1966.
ITV presenter Mark Chapman said: “One thing we have spotted just as Harry Kane took the penalty and which is completely unacceptable and ridiculous…look, someone’s got a laser pen in the stands. Whoever they are an idiot, him or her, and we can just hope that it didn’t put Kasper Schmeichel off because it’s stupid and he doesn’t deserve that.”
Many fans around the world tweeted about this incident and criticized the supporter in Wembley.
One fan wrote: ‘That laser pen incident was stupid and there is zero excuses/ justification for it. I’d ban that ‘fan’ for life. That said, it didn’t affect Schmeichel considering he saved the penalty. Still, a very poor incident.’
Former Liverpool and England striker Collymore tweeted: ‘If anyone shone a laser pen at Schmeichel, they want to ban for life.’
Another fan added: ‘Unbelievable. Someone in the crowd was pointing a laser into Schmeichel’s eyes as he was trying to save the penalty Sterling dived for.’
