In a devastating blow to Ecuadorian soccer, international midfielder Marco Angulo has passed away at age 22 following complications from an October car crash, leaving the soccer community in mourning for one of its brightest young talents.

The tragic incident

Angulo had been fighting for his life in intensive care since October 7, when he was involved in a fatal car accident. According to El Universo, the young midfielder suffered severe head and lung injuries, requiring multiple surgical interventions. The crash also claimed the lives of Independiente Juniors defender Roberto Cabezas and another friend.

Federation’s tribute

The Ecuadorian Football Federation released an emotional statement commemorating their fallen star: “The Ecuadorian Football Federation expresses its deepest sympathy over the death of Marco Angulo, who with his talent and dedication defended the colours of our country at every opportunity,” adding that “Marco was not only an outstanding player, but also a great teammate. He leaves a deep sorrow in our hearts, especially in those of us who went with him on countless trips, training camps and matches.”

At the time of the accident, Angulo was on loan to LDU Quito from Major League Soccer’s FC Cincinnati. His final match was played on October 6, just one day before the tragic crash. During his brief but impactful career, he earned two international caps for Ecuador, featuring in friendlies against Iraq and Australia.

Club reactions

FC Cincinnati expressed their grief in a heartfelt statement: “We are deeply saddened by the loss of Marco – a husband and father, a brother and son, a friend and teammate. He was a joyful, kind young man who lit up every room he entered. Our entire club grieves this tragedy, and we’re thinking of and praying for his family.”

LDU Quito, where Angulo was playing at the time of his death, stated: “His death is an irreparable loss that will leave an indelible mark on our hearts.”

Beyond his achievements on the field, Angulo is remembered as a charismatic presence who touched many lives throughout his career. His passing leaves behind a young family and a legacy of what might have been in Ecuadorian soccer.
