The American Glazers family, who have owned Manchester United for 17 years, stated on Wednesday (November 23) that they intend to investigate the possibility of selling the Old Trafford club. According to some rumors, David Beckham, the former England captain, and Man United midfielder is now willing to speak with prospective buyers about purchasing his former team.
Beckham is willing to join an “investment consortium” because he would not be able to afford to buy the club
The 47-year-old Beckham is willing to start conversations with people who are serious about a potential takeover, according to the Financial Times. He will provide help both financially and publicly in exchange. Additionally, it adds that Beckham is willing to join an “investment consortium” because he would not be able to afford to buy the club on his own.
In the past, interested parties have also sought Beckham, a co-owner of MLS team Inter Miami CF, but nothing has come of those conversations. It should be noted that the Glazer family reportedly wants to hold out for a staggering £5 billion after purchasing the company in 2005 for $790 million.
“We will evaluate all options to ensure that we best serve our fans”
Avram Glazer and Joel Glazer, executive co-chairmen and directors of the United, said in a statement, “As we seek to continue building on the club’s history of success, the board has authorized a thorough evaluation of strategic alternatives. It added, “We will evaluate all options to ensure that we best serve our fans and that Manchester United maximizes the significant growth opportunities available to the club today and in the future.”
Ever since the team went on a losing streak, Man United’s owners have been under fire. The last prize they held was in 2017, when they won the League Cup and Europa League, ending a five-year trophy drought. They failed to make the Champions League last season after finishing sixth in the EPL for the 2020/21 season. United, which is being captained by Erik Ten Hag, is currently in fifth place in the current EPL season. However, since the Dutchman became owner, a lot has been said and written about how the club is run.
Prior to Cristiano Ronaldo’s recent explosive interview with Piers Morgan, which ultimately resulted in his expulsion from the Old Trafford club on Tuesday, Erik and Ronaldo’s tense relationship had become a hot topic (November 22). He even asserted that his relationship with the proprietors wasn’t the best it could be. Given his history with the team and his overall stature, Beckham’s inclusion amid all the drama might be a game-changer.
