WTC 2023: India seals final slot following Sri Lanka’s dramatic defeat in Christchurch

India

Sri Lanka’s dramatic loss on Day 5 of the Christchurch Test has guaranteed Team India a spot in the World Test Championship (WTC) final in June. Because of their inferior Victory Percentage (PTC), India’s Asian rivals will not advance to the WTC final even if India draws or loses the fourth Test match against Australia in Ahmedabad later that day.

India qualifies for the World Test Championship Final

New Zealand’s victory in Christchurch allowed the 2021 WTC runners-up to advance to the final once more, despite the fact that India and Australia are still playing on the final day of the Ahmedabad Test. Rain intervened in Christchurch just as the game was about to end in a tie. Nonetheless, New Zealand won the match by two wickets thanks to Daryl Mitchell’s incredible batting performance in the last session and Kane Williamson’s flurry with the bat.

The Indian team will advance to the WTC final as a result of the Kiwi victory, regardless of the outcome in Ahmedabad. India has advanced to the final as a result of Sri Lanka’s inability to defeat New Zealand, who they needed to defeat in order to do so.

Currently, Sri Lanka will participate in a maximum win PCT of 53 even if they win the second Test against the Kiwis at Basin Reserve in Wellington next week.

WTC final between Australia and India at the Oval in June

The World T20 final, which will be contested on June 7 at the Oval, will reignite India-Australia animosity in an International Cricket Council (ICC) tournament. Both India and Australia will compete in a Men’s Cricket World Cup final for the first time in 20 years. The victor of the June contest will also be the first side to complete a Grand Slam of ICC titles (men’s), with both teams having previously won the ODI World Cup, T20 World Cup, and Champions Trophy.
