England captain Joe Root scored a magnificent hundred and completed 9000 runs in Test cricket on Day 3 of the second Test at Lord’s. He became the second England player after Alastair Cook to cross 9000 runs in Test cricket. Kumar Sangakkara remains the fastest batsman to score 9000 runs, reaching the mark in just 172 innings. This was Root’s second hundred of the series.

To date, Root has scored 22 hundred in 196 innings in Test cricket. And with this, he has gone past former captain Andrew Strauss in England’s all-time list for centuries. He is now joint-third with Ian Bell, Geoffrey Boycott, Colin Cowdrey, and Wally Hammond. Alastair Cook tops the list with 33 centuries while Kevin Pietersen is second on the list with 23 tons.

Records Broken

1. Joe Root became the first England player to score hundreds in successive innings in Tests since Ian Bell in Ashes 2013.

2. He became only the second batsman from England to complete 9,000 runs in Test cricket

3. Root became the fastest to 9000 Test runs in terms of days taken. He achieved this feat in 3167 days.

4. Root has scored eleven 150-plus scores in Tests, joint-most for England, alongside Cook.

5. This was Root’s fifth century of 2021, which makes him the first England player to score five centuries in a calendar year since Ian Bell in 2011.

6. Joe Root became just the second England player to complete 2000 Test runs against India, after Cook.

7. Root became the second-youngest English cricketer to complete 9,000 Test runs (30 years and 227 days). Alastair Cook is the fastest to achieve this feat at 30 years and 159 days.

8. Root slammed his seventh Test hundred against India, the joint-most among English batsmen along with Cook.

9. Root surpassed Graham Gooch (8,900) in terms of Test runs and is England’s second-highest scorer. He is only behind Alastair Cook (12,472).
