England captain Joe Root scored a magnificent hundred and completed 9000 runs in Test cricket on Day 3 of the second Test at Lord’s. He became the second England player after Alastair Cook to cross 9000 runs in Test cricket. Kumar Sangakkara remains the fastest batsman to score 9000 runs, reaching the mark in just 172 innings. This was Root’s second hundred of the series.
To date, Root has scored 22 hundred in 196 innings in Test cricket. And with this, he has gone past former captain Andrew Strauss in England’s all-time list for centuries. He is now joint-third with Ian Bell, Geoffrey Boycott, Colin Cowdrey, and Wally Hammond. Alastair Cook tops the list with 33 centuries while Kevin Pietersen is second on the list with 23 tons.

9. Root surpassed Graham Gooch (8,900) in terms of Test runs and is England’s second-highest scorer. He is only behind Alastair Cook (12,472).
