The NFL has many records that have been set and broken over the years. NFL records are made to be broken, but these five may never be broken.
5 NFL records that will never be broken
1. Most consecutive defeats: Tampa Bay Buccaneers: 26
The expansion baby Bucs lost 26 consecutive games between 1976 and 1977. The team was bad, the franchise was bad, and they lacked the skill set of other, more established teams. That organization went through one of the most difficult stages of development in sports history. Tampa now has two Super Bowl titles to its name.
2. Most sacks in one game: Derrick Thomas: 7.0
Derrick Thomas of the Kansas City Chiefs holds the single-game sack record, which he set in 1990.
Thomas had 7.0 sacks against the Seahawks, and Kansas City sacked quarterback Dave Krieg nine times in total. Despite this, the Seahawks won the game 17-16.
3. Most career rushing yards and touchdowns: Emmitt Smith: 18,355 and 164
Smith played in a run-heavy era, and while he had a great quarterback (Troy Aikman) and wide receiver (Michael Irvin) tandem, the Hall of Fame rusher was the most important piece of the Dallas Cowboys dynasty.
Mark Ingram is the closest active player to matching Smith’s record, with just over 8,000 yards in his career after being in the NFL for over a decade. Derrick Henry is the closest active player in terms of TDs, with 70.
4. Consecutive extra points: Stephen Gostkowski: 479
Stephen Gostkowski had a winning streak from 2006 to 2016. In his rookie season with the New England Patriots, Gostkowski missed an extra point. He would go on a 142-game streak without missing an extra point after missing that one.
Stephen Gostkowski would make 479 consecutive extra points in those 142 games. Because extra points have been moved back, this NFL record is unlikely to be broken. Gostkowski was an important part of the New England Patriots’ success.
5. Consecutive Super Bowl losses: Buffalo Bills: 4
The Buffalo Bills have the most unbreakable record in NFL history. During the years 1990–1993, Buffalo went to four consecutive Super Bowls. The Buffalo Bills fell short of winning the NFL’s biggest game in all four of those seasons.
The Buffalo Bills lost 20-19 to the New York Giants in Super Bowl XXV. This was their closest shot at a Super Bowl victory. They lost 37-24 to the Washington Redskins in Super Bowl XXVI. The Buffalo Bills then lost to the Dallas Cowboys in Super Bowls XXVII and XXVIII, 52-17 and 30-13, respectively.
