Lionel Messi, one of the most admired and famous footballers in the modern era of the game. The six-time FIFA Ballon d’Or award winner in the 2011-2012 football season scored a total of 91 goals for both club, Barcelona, and National team, Argentina breaking Bayern Munich’s legend, Gerd Muller’s record who scored 85 goals in 1972.
Messi scored 79 goals for the club side and 12 goals for his country, that’s an average of 1.319 goals per game. It was one of the best years for Messi in his professional career. He was honored with the Guinness World Record title for most goals in a calendar year for this feat.
2. Youngest player to win 4 Ballon d’Or awards
Almost every footballer’s dream is to win a Ballon d’Or award at least once in their career, and nowhere is this guy (Messi) who has clinched this award 6 times in total. Out of which 4 came when he was just 25 years old.
He won the first Ballon d’Or award at the age of 22. And by 2012, Messi had 4 Ballon d’Or in his bag. He had achieved when he was only 25 years, six months, and 15 days old. And became the youngest player to lift the award for the fourth time in his career. This is just an astonishing feat.
3. Most goals in La Liga history
Messi has scored a staggering 474 for Barcelona in LaLiga, which is the most by a player in the history of the league. He is the only player to score more than 400 goals in the history of the league.
The second on the list is Cristiano Ronaldo, but he left Los Blancos in 2018. So, now with Cristiano Ronaldo gone, there is no other player who is close to this record. With Messi going to play for Barcelona for few more years, these numbers are going to increase more.
4. Most goals scored for a single club
Lionel Messi holds the record for scoring the most goals for a single club. He has 672 goals by his name. Messi recently in the season 2020/21 broke Pele’s record of scoring most goals for a single club and now he has scored 651 goals for the Blaugrana in 757 games.
Given he has still two-three years more left in the club, and considering his form this tally is going to increase more and more.
5. Most assists in the history of football
Lionel Messi is not only good at goal-scoring ability but he also owns the record for the most number of assists in football history. Till now, he has 356 assists by his name. Out of which 305 came for Barcelona and 51 for Argentina. No other player in the league has more than 300 assists.
