With the unmanned Artemis I mission to the Moon, which will launch on Monday, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is prepared to take the next and most important step in space exploration (August 29). After 50 years, NASA is finally launching a mission to the moon. Artemis I will be on its maiden voyage on a mission to take humans back to the Moon, and eventually to Mars.
The launch of Artemis 1 on NASA’s first Space Launch System megarocket from Launch Pad 39B at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida will be broadcast live by the space agency on August 29. Special celebrities such stars Chris Evans, Jack Black, and Keke Palmer will appear during the launch day live stream. In the web live feed, you can already see real-time views of the Artemis 1 moon rocket perched atop its pad.
The United States Vice President Kamala Harris will be among the hundreds of thousands of spectators along Florida’s beaches who will be witnessing the launch. This launch has been decades in the making.
Details about the launch of the Artemis I
The launch is scheduled to be exactly at 8:33 am EDT, on the 29th of August. The mission duration is set to be about 42 days, 3 hours, and 20 minutes. The total distance traveled at this time would be 1.3 million miles. The re-entry speed of the rocket into Earth’s atmosphere would be 24,500 mph, which is Mach 32. The splashdown will occur on 10th October 2022.
Artemis I would be the first in a series of complex missions which will help to sustain a long-term human presence on the Moon in the upcoming decades.
On Saturday, 27 August, NASA administrator, Bill Nelson said, “This mission goes with a lot of hopes and dreams of a lot of people. And we are the Artemis generation.”
The main mission of the launch would be to check and test the SLS and the Orion crew capsule sits on top of the rocket. Another mission would be to demonstrate Orion’s systems in a spaceflight environment. This would be to ensure that the re-entry into the atmosphere is safe, and so is the descent, splashdown, and recovery.
This month’s launch should be quite the spectacle because the last time a rocket this potent thundered off a KSC pad was in 1973 when a Saturn V moon rocket delivered Skylab into orbit, ending the Apollo era.
