Veteran Astronauts Complete Critical 5.5-Hour Mission Amid Extended Stay Complications

In a remarkable demonstration of space exploration prowess, NASA astronauts Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore conducted a record-setting 5.5-hour spacewalk aboard the International Space Station (ISS) on Thursday, marking another milestone in their unexpectedly extended mission.

“NASA astronauts Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore on Thursday stepped out of the International Space Station (ISS) for a 5.5-hour spacewalk, setting a new record”, the US space agency said. The spacewalk, Williams’ ninth and Wilmore’s fifth, further solidified their positions in NASA’s history books. Williams has now accumulated an impressive 62 hours and 6 minutes of total spacewalk time, securing her place as fourth on NASA’s all-time list.

During their extensive extravehicular activity (EVA), the astronauts successfully completed several critical tasks. They removed a radio frequency group antenna assembly from the station’s truss and gathered surface material samples from both the Destiny laboratory and Quest airlock for detailed analysis.

Extended stay complications

The record-breaking spacewalk comes amid ongoing challenges regarding the astronauts’ return to Earth. Originally arriving at the ISS in June 2024 via Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft, Williams and Wilmore were scheduled for just an eight-day mission. However, technical issues with their spacecraft forced NASA to revise their plans significantly.

SpaceX to the rescue

In an unexpected turn of events, NASA announced on Wednesday that it was collaborating with Elon Musk’s SpaceX to ensure the safe return of both astronauts “as soon as practical.” This development gained additional attention when President Donald Trump announced that SpaceX would “soon” begin operations to bring the American astronauts home.

Looking ahead

While initially rescheduled for a February return via SpaceX, the mission has faced further delays as the company prepares a new spacecraft for the recovery operation. The situation highlights the complexities and challenges of modern space operations, even as astronauts continue to achieve new milestones in space exploration.

The successful spacewalk demonstrates the astronauts’ continued commitment to advancing space science despite their extended stay. It marks another chapter in NASA’s ongoing mission to maintain and enhance humanity’s presence in space.
