Asteroid 2022 SR2: Asteroid 5 times faster than hypersonic missile to fly past Earth

According to NASA’s asteroid tracker, an asteroid traveling five times the speed of a hypersonic missile will pass extremely close to Earth on Wednesday. According to reports, two asteroids will pass Earth that day. As per NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory’s Center for Near-Earth Object Studies (CNEOS), the two asteroids have been named Asteroid 2022 SA1 and Asteroid 2022 SR2 (JPL).

Asteroid 2022 SR2 is traveling five times faster than the Earth’s fastest missile

Asteroid 2022 SR2, which measures between 6.9 and 15 meters in diameter, is traveling at a speed of around 21.78 kilometers per second, or 78,408 kilometers per hour. This is approximately 63.5 times the speed of sound.

Russia’s Kh-47M2 Kinzhal, one of the most prominent hypersonic missiles, travels at a speed of 4.116 kilometers per second. This means that the asteroid 2022 SR2 is moving five times faster than the Earth’s fastest missile.

The asteroid will pass by Earth at a distance of approximately 445,800 kilometers, which is extremely close. However, NASA, on the other hand, claims that there is no danger of it colliding with Earth.

Meanwhile, the diameter of the asteroid 2022 SA1 is estimated to be between 24 and 55 meters. It is traveling at approximately 14.10 kilometers per second, or approximately 40 times the speed of sound.
