Dr. Beth Weinstock is the latest guest to be featured on the Real Talk podcast hosted by Susan Stone and Kristina Supler. Dr. Weinstock is a physician by profession and has a passion for poetry. She is a mother of four who lost one of her sons to unintentional ingestion of fentanyl in 2021. That led to her founding BirdieLight alongside her daughter to educate students and their parents about the dangers of fentanyl. The podcast goes into how drug use may extend beyond just recreational use at parties, the stigma associated with students using drugs and how understanding it can save lives.
Real Talk’s Latest Podcast Welcomes Dr. Beth Weinstock
According to Dr. Weinstock, it is crucial to talk about fentanyl in a way that helps to reduce the stigma associated with it. Using comparisons, for instance, 50,000 people lost their lives at the height of the AIDS epidemic, but just last year, i.e., in 12 months, hundreds if not thousands of people have lost their lives to opioids, three-quarters of which were caused by fentanyl. While the stigma associated with drug use may never entirely be eliminated, parents need to be open about discussing it with their children.
An article in Medical Xpress on Feb. 14, 2022 noted that users may not always know that the drugs they are taking may contain fentanyl. However, the opioid is 100x more potent than morphine and around 50x times more than heroin. That’s one reason why so many youngsters are losing their lives to it.
