KJK Student Defense Attorneys Susan Stone and Kristina Supler sit down with Hanna Stotland, an independent educational consultant specializing in crisis management. The podcast goes in-depth, discussing how students with academic or disciplinary violations can get the chance to achieve their educational dreams. The conversation also explores the recent updates made to the college application process and when students are required to disclose their disciplinary history.
Hanna Stotland stresses the need for students to have an effective strategy that helps them overcome the obstacles they may encounter during the process. The goal should be for students to show how they can become excellent contributing members of the academic community despite their past.
Real Talk Podcast – Hanna Stotland
Many once mandatory questions like criminal history-related questions have gone into the non-default status for several years, and the same is happening for disciplinary questions. However, there are individual colleges that may ask these questions and require that students answer them for their applications to be considered.
According to Stotland, less competitive colleges may not ask as many questions about past criminality or disciplinary issues compared to the more competitive tier of colleges. So, a lot will depend on where students are applying.

“Students and parents will find the podcast insightful, especially if they are about to start filling out enrollment and admission forms for their kids. The podcast attempts to answer some of the most commonly asked questions and concerns from parents, especially regarding criminal history and disciplinary action.” Said Real Talk’s podcast co-host and attorney Susan Stone.
The important thing is for students to be truthful. Not being honest can be the worst thing, even worse than underlying conduct. It is essential to answer all questions truthfully because lying and being discovered will negatively impact many students academically.
