Cadets of the Hernando County Composite Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol volunteered at the 2022 Weeki Wachee Swamp Fest. Held at the Linda Pederson Park on Shoal Line Blvd, the annual event brings the community together with local entertainment, crafts and much more.
At the three-day event, cadets operated an outreach booth from which they provided an introduction to the aerospace education and emergency services missions of the Civil Air Patrol. Additionally, cadets raised money for Wreaths Across America, a charity founded to honor fallen veterans.
Demonstrating the Civil Air Patrol core value of Volunteer Service, cadets provided parking assistance for the thousands of visitors that attend this beloved community event.

“I was impressed at how the cadets conducted themselves,” said Senior Member Kelly Fitzgerald. As the squadron’s recruiting officer, SM Fitzgerald mentored the cadets who worked the outreach booth.
“We had many fantastic conversations with veterans and with parents whose children are eager to join our youth program,” said SM Fitzgerald. “It is so encouraging to see the community support of our cadet activities.”
SM Fitzgerald said the Hernando County Composite Squadron is currently teaching the cadets cross county navigation – a key skill for obtaining a pilot’s license – in addition to the normal leadership, character, physical fitness, emergency services and aerospace classes.
The Civil Air Patrol is open to cadets starting at age 12. Adult members may join at any age. Meetings are on Tuesday evenings starting at 7 pm.

Established in 1941, Civil Air Patrol is the official auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force and as such is a member of its Total Force. In its auxiliary role, CAP operates a fleet of 560 single-engine Cessna aircraft and more than 2,100 small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (sUAS) and performs about 90% of continental U.S. inland search and rescue missions as tasked by the Air Force Rescue Coordination Center. Often using innovative cellphone forensics and radar analysis software, CAP was credited by the AFRCC with saving 107 lives in fiscal 2020. CAP’s 56,000 members also perform homeland security, disaster relief and drug interdiction missions at the request of federal, state and local agencies. As a nonprofit organization, CAP plays a leading role in aerospace education using national academic standards-based STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) education. Members also serve as mentors to over 23,000 young people participating in CAP’s Cadet Programs. One of the premier public service organizations in America, CAP benefits the nation with an estimated economic impact of $209 million annually
