The Louise Bourgeois spider sculpture towering over 10 feet and spreading 18 feet across is going to hit the auction block at Sotheby’s in New York. The sculpture is going to break one or more records. Even if the price crosses the low estimate, it is likely to become Bourgeois’s most expensive work after accounting for Sotheby’s fees. Additionally, this is going to be the most expensive sculpture by a female artist, surpassing another of her work sold at $28 million.
The “Spider” is being offered by Brazilian bank Itaú Unibanco’s nonprofit arm known as Fundação Itaú. It was previously acquired by co-founder and art collector Olavo Setubal. Additionally, the sculpture was the centerpiece of the 1996 São Paulo Biennial, a unique collection of works by Louise Bourgeois. It was also on loan to the São Paulo Museum of Modern Art for a decade. The piece was displayed at several institutions across Brazil.

The French-American artist’s “spiders” is a prominent display at several leading museums across the world. The Tate Modern in London, the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa, the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, and the Dia Beacon in New York are the cherry on top. Additionally, “the ‘Spider’ has become a global icon, recognizable by all. Given its prominent presence in cultural institutions around the world,” stated David Galperin. Galperinis the head of contemporary art for Sotheby’s in New York.
“It is not only a paragon of modern sculpture but has taken on a larger symbolic presence within contemporary culture internationally,” added Galperin. The Louise Bourgeois sculpture will be displayed at the Sotheby’s HQ on May 6. The sale of the contemporary piece is scheduled for May 18.
