A Unique Approach to Wedding Expenses
Weddings are often seen as once-in-a-lifetime celebrations, but for one New York City couple, the costs associated with their big day were daunting enough to inspire a controversial solution. Nova and Reemo Style, who recently tied the knot, made headlines and stirred debate online by charging their wedding guests $333 each to attend their celebration.
In an interview with NBC, the newlyweds explained the unconventional choice, likening their wedding to a high-profile event that guests should be willing to invest in—much like a concert for a favorite artist. “People choose to go to a Beyoncé concert because they know they’re going to have an experience,” Nova shared. “We thought, why not put the stress on the guests and sell tickets for our wedding?”
Reemo admitted that he was initially skeptical of the idea. “I was like, ‘Babe, people aren’t going to come,’” he recalled. Yet, despite their concerns, the couple went ahead with their plan, ultimately saving over $70,000 in wedding expenses. The $333 ticket price covered not only entry to the wedding but also a complimentary seat on a double-decker bus for a 12-hour tour of New York City.
Mixed reactions from guests and the internet
As guests arrived at the wedding, it became clear that not everyone was thrilled about the arrangement. Nova recounted some of the feedback they received, including remarks like, “Who do you guys think you are? Jay-Z and Beyoncé?” and “I would never spend money on tickets for a wedding.”
The decision has sparked a broader conversation on social media and wedding forums, with many people criticizing the idea as “tacky” and “ridiculous.” On the Wedding Wire forum, one user wrote, “I would never think of making someone pay to come to my wedding! That is just ridiculous.” Another added, “I absolutely would not pay to come to a wedding, because I’m already paying to go—gas, time to get ready, a gift—that’s money/time I could spend in other ways.”
Despite the backlash, the Styles’ decision highlights a growing trend among couples to find creative ways to manage the ever-increasing costs of weddings.
Rising costs drive unconventional solutions
According to The Knot, the average cost of a U.S. wedding in 2023 surged to $35,000, a $5,000 increase from the previous year. The rising costs, fueled in part by inflation, have prompted some couples to explore unorthodox strategies to finance their weddings, even if it means asking their guests to foot part of the bill.
While the Styles’ approach may not be for everyone, it underscores the financial pressures many couples face and raises important questions about the evolving norms around wedding etiquette. As wedding costs continue to climb, more couples might find themselves considering bold, and potentially controversial, ways to fund their special day.
