Modern-Day Hermit Who Shunned Society for Three Decades Passes Away in Sardinia

Mauro Morandi, the Italian hermit who captured global attention for his three-decade-long solitary life on the Mediterranean island of Budelli, has died at age 85. His passing comes just three years after his reluctant return to mainstream society.

In 1989, what began as a journey to escape consumerism in Polynesia took an unexpected turn when Morandi discovered Budelli, a pristine island near Sardinia. In a serendipitous twist, the island’s caretaker was approaching retirement, leading Morandi to assume the role that would define the next 32 years of his life.

Life in isolation

From his humble dwelling—a World War II-era shelter crafted from coral, granite, and shells—Morandi became the island’s dedicated guardian. His sustainable lifestyle included a solar energy system for power and a simple fireplace for warmth, while regular deliveries ensured his basic needs were met.

Throughout his tenure, Morandi’s dedication to environmental conservation became legendary. He maintained the island’s pristine condition and worked tirelessly to educate visitors about ecological preservation, earning him the nickname “Italian Robinson Crusoe” from international media.

Forced departure and new beginnings

In 2021, Italian authorities required Morandi to leave his beloved island after it was designated as a nature park. The government relocated him to La Maddalena, a nearby archipelago in Sardinia, where he began the challenging transition back to modern society.

Legacy of resilience

Despite the dramatic life change at an advanced age, Morandi remained remarkably positive. “It never ended. I am a living example that a new life is possible. You can always start everything again, even if you are over 80. There are always more things to experience. I am happy with this new life and have regained the joy of living and the comforts of everyday life,” he told CNN in 2021.

His story serves as a powerful testament to human adaptability and the enduring spirit of reinvention, even in life’s final chapters. Morandi’s legacy lives on as a reminder that it’s never too late to embrace change and find joy in new beginnings.
