Balenciaga launched the ‘Monday shopper bag’ as part of its Spring 2022 collection. Sounds fantastic right? Wow! A new addition to the bag collection for luxury bag owners. But, oops! Seems like the expectations bubble is going to burst with the pain of disappointment. This new Balenciaga bag looks nothing more than a plastic bag. The bag bears an uncanny resemblance to Tesco carrier bags.
The Balenciaga bag costs a whopping £925
Made of white calfskin with blue vertical stripes, it has a red Balenciaga logo in the center. The fashion brand’s latest product, which costs a whopping £925, set everyone on a nostalgia rollercoaster because of its near-exact likeness to Tesco bags given out to consumers in the 1980s. While the supermarket has modified the appearance of its bags and encourages customers to use its more environmentally friendly bags, it still offers carrier bags for 20p each in stores. The bags are currently created from waste plastic that has been recycled.
It is “a modern interpretation of the archetypal bag” according to the brand, with silver hardware, snap closure, inside zip pocket, and inner patch pocket. It also comes in yellow and red. Tesco mocked the design with a witty remark. “If you thought @BALENCIAGA’s new bag was rare, try getting your hands on one of the originals,” said Tesco.
Balenciaga was also chastised in 2017 for charging $2,145 for a tote bag that appeared identical to an IKEA giant’s blue bag, which costs only 99 cents in-store. Well, seems like you can’t make a fool out of customers and sell anything in the name of the brand. (www.echelon.health)
