A recent trial with a psychedelic substance found in magic mushrooms that aids in the treatment along with psychotherapy gave hope to those who suffer from depression.
The study was conducted at 22 locations in the United Kingdom, Europe, and North America
A single 25mg dose of psilocybin was found to quickly relieve the symptoms of severe depression in almost one-third of patients. According to research, therapy sessions were designed to help patients pinpoint problems and possible solutions.
The study, which was conducted at 22 locations in the United Kingdom, Europe, and North America, dubbed the findings “extraordinary.”
233 people with resistant depression were included in phase 2 of the trial
Nearly 100 million people worldwide suffer from treatment-resistant depression– A serious depressive disorder that hasn’t improved after at least two antidepressant medications. According to specialists, 50% of those impacted have difficulty performing daily tasks.
233 people with resistant depression were included in phase 2 of the trial. They were assigned at random to consume one Comp360 capsule containing 1 mg, 10 mg, or 25 mg of synthetic psilocybin. Before the medication took action, patients were asked to concentrate inward for six to eight hours. Compared to individuals who received 10 or 1 mg, those who were administered 25 mg of the drug experienced the biggest effects.
The results of three depression tests were published in the New England Journal of Medicine. It said that the depression scale improved right away after the treatment started.
Despite such encouraging outcomes, many patients experienced several side effects. The most common of which were headaches, nausea, fatigue, and even vertigo.
A larger phase 3 investigation will start later this year to investigate the effects of two dosages of psilocybin.
