By May 1st all Americans over 16 years will become eligible to get a COVID-19 vaccine. 5 states (Alaska, Arizona, Mississippi, Utah, and West Virginia) have already opened vaccines to all adults over 16.
The possible side effects of the COVID vaccine can include pain, redness and swelling at the injection site, fever, headache, tiredness, nausea, chills, and muscle pain. There is nothing to worry about as the side effects will pass away in a few days, however, you can minimize the side effects by following a healthy diet on the day you get the COVID shot.
Here we present the list of food items you should consume and avoid on the day of vaccination.
Hydrate yourself with healthy fluids
Fever induced by the vaccine can lead the body to dehydration hence it is very important to remain abundantly hydrated before and after the vaccination. Drink lots of water, tea, broth-based soup, or your favorite juice before and after the vaccination. Proper hydration will help you combat dizziness and mood swings after the vaccination.
Say no to alcohol
According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), it is recommended to avoid alcohol the day before and after getting the vaccine. Consumption of alcohol causes dehydration, and this could make the body aches after the vaccination even worse. Alcohol intake can also increase the risk of acute respiratory distress
Consume high-fiber diet
Doctors recommend switching to a high-fiber diet at least two weeks before the vaccination and continue for a minimum of two weeks after the second shot.
Fiber-rich food such as wholegrain breakfast cereals, fruits like berries, pears, melon, and oranges and vegetables such as broccoli, carrots and sweetcorn encourage the growth of beneficial bacteria that support the immune response.
Food items containing omega 3 fatty acid
Omega 3 fatty acid provides resolvins and pectins to the body. These two compounds decrease inflammation in the body.
You can get adequate amounts of omega-3s by eating a variety of foods, including the following:
- Fish and other seafood (especially cold-water fatty fish, such as salmon, mackerel, tuna, herring, and sardines)
- Nuts and seeds (such as flaxseed, chia seeds, and walnuts)
- Plant oils (such as flaxseed oil, soybean oil, and canola oil)
- Fortified foods (such as eggs, yogurt, juices, milk, soy beverages)
Green Veggies
Green veggies are rich in antioxidants. Antioxidants remove free radicals from the body and fight inflammation. It is recommended to consume cooked vegetables to increase nutrients absorption.
Stay hydrated, eat healthy and rest well before and after getting the vaccine shot. In this way you will be giving your body a better chance to respond to the vaccine. Do not forget to follow the basic rules like wearing a mask, following social distancing and sanitizing yourself regularly even after the vaccination.
