Apple watch dials 911, saves New York cyclist's life after crash

On numerous occasions, the Apple Watch has saved lives. Many stories demonstrate that it saved lives by detecting irregularities in users’ health with sensors that measure heart rate, ECG, and other parameters. In one recent event, an Apple Watch saved the life of a rider in New York who had been in a catastrophic bike accident. The event occurred last month, when Eric Zollinger, a real estate broker, was riding a Citi Bike home from his office after a heavy rainstorm.

His Apple Watch noticed the fall and automatically dialed 911

However, his commute took a catastrophic turn when he encountered a hidden pothole submerged by floodwaters. His bike hit the pothole, causing him to be thrown off his bike onto the pavement. Despite injuries to his nose, face, and knee, Zollinger returned home, but subsequently fainted and passed out in his bathroom, hitting his body on the tub.

Fortunately, his Apple Watch noticed the fall, automatically dialed 911, and notified his emergency contacts of his whereabouts. The smartwatch features a built-in fall detection mechanism, which connects the user to emergency services if it ”detects a hard fall.”

‘The next thing I recall hearing was, ‘911, what’s your emergency?’  Zollinger stated this while recalling the incident.

He subsequently went to a local hospital for an evaluation. Fortunately, examinations revealed that he had not fractured any bones and was eventually freed.

If the Apple Watch detects that you have been motionless for one minute, it will instantly initiate an emergency call

Zollinger hailed the smartwatch’s prompt response and credited it with saving his life. ”I don’t know how things would have gone for me if the watch hadn’t alerted me,” he said.

”I feel very fortunate and grateful at what transpired and happened in how my Apple Watch helped me. It’s a very clever watch. Apple thinks of everything,” Zollinger added.

Smartwatches have helped save many lives. Last year, a 42-year-old man in the United Kingdom explained how a smartwatch helped him survive a heart attack. According to Express.co.uk, Paul Wapham, CEO of Hockey Wales, was out for a morning run near his home in the Morriston area of Swansea when he felt an excruciating pain in his chest. He managed to notify his wife via his watch, and she rushed him to the hospital.

If the Apple Watch detects that you have been motionless for one minute, it will instantly initiate an emergency call and send a message with your location to your emergency contacts.
