1 child has died in mystery liver disease outbreak, says WHO

The fight against the Covid-19 pandemic is still on with a new variant being discovered in parts of the world. Despite this new diseases have emerged from diverse corners of the globe. A strange liver illness is in children in several parts of the United States and Europe, primarily the United Kingdom.

A strange liver illness outbreak affecting kids in Europe and the United States has resulted in at least one fatality, according to the WHO. The United Nations’ health officials announced on Saturday evening that it has received reports of at least 169 cases of severe hepatitis of unknown origin from at least a dozen nations.

The incident has affected children ranging in age from one month to sixteen years old. Out of the total numbers, 17 of those who became unwell required liver transplants. The WHO did not specify the country of fatality. The first occurrences were in the United Kingdom, where 114 youngsters had caught the infection.

“It is not yet clear if there has been an increase in hepatitis cases, or an increase in awareness of hepatitis cases that occur at the expected rate but go undetected,” WHO said in a statement.

Experts believe that there is a link between infection and a virus that causes cold. However, further research is necessary for accurate information. “While adenovirus is a possible hypothesis, investigations are ongoing for the causative agent.”, WHO said; noting that the virus has been found in at least 74 of the cases.
