For the first time in 75 years, the popular board game Scrabble is undergoing significant changes. The word game has been operating since 1938, and its dictionary has grown to include hundreds of additional acceptable words as English has expanded. However, the board itself has always been the same. Scrabble is set to change its board to accommodate individuals who find the game too intimidating, with a simpler version printed on the other side dubbed Scrabble Together.
What is Scrabble Together?
Mattel, the game’s owner, stated that the adjustment will make the game “more accessible for anyone who finds word games intimidating.”
The scoring system in Scrabble Together is simpler, as players work together to complete “goal cards.” Unlike the original game, players do not compete against each other for the highest score.
Ray Adler, Mattel’s Vice President and Global Head of Games, explained:
“Scrabble has truly stood the test of time as one of the most popular board games in history, and we want to ensure the game continues to be inclusive for all players.
“For anyone who’s ever thought, ‘word games aren’t for me’, or felt a little intimidated by the classic game, Scrabble Together Mode is an ideal option.
“With team-based and faster gameplay, Scrabble Together Mode continues to celebrate the wonder of words just as the Classic version does, but thanks to its exciting new cooperative and dynamic gameplay, it’s more accessible and brings people together.”
