A large-scale Dota 2 event, The International, cancels live audiences and is immediately issuing refunds. Due to Netflix’s DOTA: Dragon’s Blood anime adaptation of the video game, the multiplayer online battle arena game has recently enjoyed a resurgence in popularity. Valve Corporation, the MOBA’s creator, even provided an update to coincide with the Netflix anime’s release. They altered the new player experience with the update, making it more beginner-friendly.
Valve’s success with Dota 2 is undeniable, but the business has arguably accomplished more in the field of digital distribution. Steam, Valve’s video game digital distribution platform for PC gaming, continues to be the most popular, with thousands of games and millions of monthly active users. Valve has built on its success with Steam and is currently working on the Steam Deck. Valve Corporation delivered Steam Deck dev kits to the press and several game teams for an exclusive first look ahead of its December public release. With such strong feedback from the press and game developers, the Steam Deck is almost certain to be a success.
Dota 2 The International and COVID-19
Dota 2, The International, according to Kotaku, cancels live audiences and will issue refunds to ticket holders. Valve hosts the International every year in a different city. Bucharest was the host city this year. Valve began selling tickets on September 22nd for the event. It was scheduled for a big live audience. Attendees had to be fully vaccinated and masked. But expectations for a live audience quickly shattered. The International will now take place without a live audience due to an increase of COVID-19 cases in Romania. Valve stated on their official Dota 2 website, “To ensure the safety of all players, talent, and production staff participating in the event, we have decided to refund all ticket sales for The International 2021.”
Dota 2’s fandom still strong
Valve Corporation has benefited and suffered as a result of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Steam saw an increase in concurrent players as a result of the pandemic compelling people to stay at home. Indeed, with the release of Cyberpunk 2077, Steam set a new record for the concurrent player count. Valve Corporation probably suffered a financial loss as a result of the discontinuation of the International’s live audience. Valve had previously postponed the International indefinitely due to COVID in April but announced in June that the tournament would return to the host country of Sweden. When COVID limitations in Sweden made it difficult for players and staff to travel to the host city, there were changes in plans. Despite Bucharest’s willingness to host the International, the event will be devoid of live spectators.
Dota 2’s fandom is still strong, and they are famous for banding together like they did to collect money to improve the game’s flawed tutorial. Although supporters can only watch the competition online, there will undoubtedly be a lot of enthusiasm for the game.
