New York faces the longest snow drought, awaiting the winter’s first snow

New York City is experiencing its longest snow drought as it waits for the first snow of the winter. Here’s all you need to know.

NYC’s longest-ever snow drought

A snowless streak is leaving New Yorkers puzzled. The city of New York broke its 50-year-old record for the first snowfall of the winter. Additionally, it’s also close to making a record for the highest number of continuous days without measurable flakes. “It’s really sad. We don’t like to see the snow. But now we’re sorely missing it,” stated Anne Hansen, a retired teacher. NYC usually experiences its first snowfall for winter around mid-December. Last year, it was on Christmas Eve.

As per meteorologists, snowfall was measured at 0.1 inches in Central Park. However, the flakes that fell on Wednesday were not enough to count. (www.newsoftwares.net) As per the U S National Weather Service (NWS), the longest snow drought was in 1973 with residents experiencing snowfall on 29 January. Snowfall is loved by children and office workers alike as they get time off from school and work. “You stay home, you drink hot cocoa; it’s beautiful and the dog loves it. The snow is pretty to look at on the first day, but afterward, it’s dirty and I don’t like it. It’s slushy. It’s nasty,” stated filmmaker Reneta Romain.

More on the no-snow show in New York

No snow Sunday will mean the longest wait since 1869 when the recording first began. The city is also close to reaching its longest consecutive snow drought or snowless days. The current record is 332 days, which ended on 15 December 2020. As per meteorologists, this is “very unusual”. They believe the global La Niña is responsible for the weather patterns.
