The US state of Florida is known for weird occurrences. From brave citizens facing gators to crazy schemes to “shoot down” hurricanes, the internet is rife with somewhat implausible tales from Florida. At the moment, a mystery 80-foot-long object discovered at a Florida beach is generating headlines as people speculate as to whether it is a sunken ship or something more sinister.
The big, enigmatic item has emerged through the sands along the shoreline of Daytona Beach in Volusia County and is causing a stir.
The unidentified object was recently found by officials and beachgoers, possibly as a result of the two recent hurricanes that devastated Florida: Hurricane Ian in September and Hurricane Nicole in November. The object was also discovered as a result of a consistent barrage of high tides and choppy waves.
Hurricane Nicole was one of the ten most powerful storms to hit the United States.
According to sources quoted in the New York Times, the enigmatic object appears to be constructed of wood and metal and is a remarkable 80 feet long on Florida’s East Coast. Normally, unusual finds like these are roped off to protect them, but in this case, tying it off is not an option because strong tides are still submerging the artifact.
In order to further explore the object, the state’s underwater archaeological team has been alerted, according to Kevin Captain, a spokesman for the Volusia County government.
“It is a mystery,” said Tamra Malphurs, a spokesperson for Volusia County Beach Safety. “Many people think it is an old ship of some sort,” she added.
She said, in a conversation with WKMG-TV, “We haven’t seen this kind of erosion in a very long time,” adding that she has been a frequent visitor to the beach for approximately 25 years but has never seen the object.
