YouTube TV wins the rights to broadcast the NFL games
The video platform won the rights to broadcast most NFL football games from the next year in the US. The win is major for the Google subsidiary and will elevate its place with sports streaming. On Thursday it announced its right for broadcasting the Sunday games on its subscription service. Customers paying $64.99 a month for the viewing package will need to pay an additional fee to watch the games.
However, they can also watch them on an a-la-carte basis. However, YouTube will not be showing games featuring local games since it falls under a different contract. Additionally, YouTube TV is not going to have exclusive rights. It will be sharing some broadcasting rights with CBS and Fox networks within the US. Roger Goodell welcoming the new changes, stated this brings in a “new era of how fans across the United States watch and follow the NFL.” Goodell is the commissioner of the National Football League.

For years, the NFL has been building and growing its presence on YouTube with highlight and game summary videos. This allowed the NFL to reach younger audiences favoring shorter videos over complete matches that last over three hours. “This partnership is yet another example of us looking towards the future and building the next generation of NFL fans,” stated Goodell.
Currently, the NFL has over 10 million subscribers on its official YouTube channel where it features its short videos. The NFL is hoping to further expand its audience by offering authentic and official content and connecting with YouTube creators. The rights won by YouTube TV were previously under DirecTV, a satellite operator. As per media reports, the previous holders were paying the NFL about $1.5 billion annually.
