Nubia & The Amazons #1, is a first, as it is the first time Wonder Woman’s Amazons welcome the transgender amazon woman into their society in a moving and unforgettable moment, published in DC Comics.
Stephanie Williams, Vita Ayala, Alitha Martinez, Mark Morales, Emilio Lopez, and Becca Carey star in a new DC series. It is about Nubia’s reign as Queen of the Amazons. Beginning with Nubia’s arrival on Themiscyra, readers recall the Amazons’ magical Well of Souls. It is a passageway through which women who have died as a result of the fear of ‘Man’s World’ are reincarnated. Then, granted new life among the immortal women. The five new sisters born of the Well represent the first set of women to pass through the well in a long time. They awaken with no memory of who they were, where they are, or what awaits them. For one thing, it’s a rebirth they’ve been waiting for their entire lives.
All present assemble to witness the women determining their names in the Royal Palace. It is after witnessing the women being welcomed and tested and pondering their responsibilities in the future of the Amazons. One of the most moving scenes occurs when “Bia” stands with tears in her eyes. Bia is unable to express how she feels because it is the moment her soul has longed for.
Bia the first transgender amazon in DC comics
Stephanie Williams and Vita Ayala of Nubia & The Amazons verified the subtextual reading that Bia is a Black trans-Amazonian on Twitter. Bia will be a full-fledged character, according to Williams, who reassured supporters that she isn’t “isn’t a box to tick… that [she] is important to her community. Just as Black trans women are important to us in real life”. Vita Ayala went on to say that they wanted to present Bia, the First Transgender Amazon in DC Comics, and her tale in a natural way. Therefore, why they didn’t reveal before the release of the issue.
Throughout Nubia & The Amazons #1, Williams, Ayala, and co. did an excellent job using art as a subtext. When the Well of Souls reintroduces, it is made plain that the souls reincarnated through it died “by acts of violence” in Man’s World. With violence against the transgender population in the United States on the rise, readers are free to connect the two components of the story. Thereby, assuming Bia has been a victim of similar abuse in the past. A later scene depicts the recruits being given a puzzle in the style of ‘Labyrinth Spheres,’ further emphasizing the allegorical. Designed to test the new Amazons’ abilities, Bia completes the task almost swiftly. Hence, making her the best Amazon yet in ‘navigating a maze,’ providing yet another perspective on her terrible life.
Finally, Nubia & The Amazons #1 demonstrates that on Themiscyra, all women are welcome. Trans women are Wonder Women, as Wonder Woman Lynda Carter described it. The story has come to an end. Bia’s journey as a trans woman will also glorify in future issues. Anyone interested can get their hands on a copy of Nubia & The Amazons #1 right now.
