Who is Karla Sofía Gascón? First openly trans actress nominated for an Oscar

A groundbreaking milestone at the Oscars

Karla Sofía Gascón made history as the first openly transgender actress to be nominated for an Academy Award in the Best Actress category. The Spanish-born actress received the nomination for her role as Juan “Manitas” Del Monte, a Mexican drug kingpin, in Jacques Audiard’s Emilia Pérez, which has dominated the Oscars 2025 nominations with a total of 13 nods.

The film, a Spanish-language masterpiece, also earned nominations for Best Picture and Best Supporting Actress for Zoe Saldana. Despite debates surrounding the lack of Mexican representation in the cast, Emilia Pérez has garnered critical acclaim, with Gascón’s performance earning widespread praise.

An inspiring Golden Globe moment

Emilia Pérez has already tasted success, winning Best Film in the Musical or Comedy category at the Golden Globes. During her acceptance speech, Gascón delivered a powerful message:
“I have a message for you: The light always wins over darkness. You can maybe put us in jail, you can beat us up, but you can never take away our soul, our existence, and our identity.”

Early life and passion for acting

Born on March 31, 1972, in Alcobendas, Spain, Karla Sofía Gascón discovered her passion for acting at a young age. By 16, she had decided to pursue acting professionally and later earned her degree from the ECAM (School of Cinematic Arts and Audiovisual Studies).

Gascón launched her acting career in 1995 with a role in the Spanish soap opera El Súper. Over the years, she appeared in numerous Spanish shows and films, including Calle Nueva, Box 507, and Say I Do.

In 2009, Gascón moved to Mexico, where she became a household name, starring in popular telenovelas and box-office hits like The Noble Family (2013) and El Señor de los Cielos (2014).

Transition and autobiography

In 2016, Gascón publicly came out as a trans woman, a decision that she later described as uncertain for her career. Reflecting on her journey, she told The New York Times:
“When I finished my transition, I didn’t know if I was going to have a career after that.”

Her transition became a central theme in her 2018 autobiography, Karsia, Una historia extraordinaria (Karsia: An Extraordinary Story), which chronicles her personal and professional journey.

Personal life and family

Gascón shares her life with her wife, Marisa Gutiérrez, whom she met at the age of 19 in her hometown. The couple has a daughter, born in 2011, who has been a constant source of support and inspiration for the actress.

A legacy in the making

With her historic Oscar nomination, Karla Sofía Gascón has not only broken barriers in the film industry but also cemented her place as a trailblazer for transgender representation in cinema. As the world awaits the outcome of the Academy Awards, her journey serves as a testament to resilience, talent, and the power of authentic storytelling.
