Cosmo the Spacedog is one of the newest characters to enter the Marvel Cinematic Universe through Guardians of the Galaxy. However, Cosmo is no ordinary labrador. Voiced by Maria Bakalova, the Borat Subsequent Moviefilm breakout actress, Cosmo was first seen in The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special in November 2022. Her origin story stems from the 1960s, the era of the space race. She was one of the many dogs sent to space by the Soviet Union’s space program to test the viability of manned missions in space. However, after being discovered by the Collector, the beloved dog willingly became an exhibit in the Museum of Knowhere. The museum is a cosmic purpose and is the current headquarters of the Guardians. Following the museum’s destruction during the power stone chaos, Cosmos gained the freedom to roam.
Cosmo the Spacedog possesses several extraordinary power as a result of experimental enhancement. They grant her psionic abilities in addition to longevity. Moreover, her durability allowed her to survive the explosion following the power stone fiasco. Cosmo’s intelligence to perform complex tasks and telekinesis sets her apart. She can move and manipulate objects with her will, proving her to be a crucial aid.
Cosmo: Movie vs comics version
Cosmo the Superdog’s story is not very different from the comics. However, he is a dog and has a much more detailed origin story. He was lost after benign sent on a space mission, resulting in him drifting in space for several years. Drifting in space, he eventually encounters the Fault which transports him to Knowehere. Cosmo’s prolonged exposure to the Fault enhances his natural abilities, giving him special powers. He also develops high intelligence and the ability to converse in several languages. He eventually becomes the security chief of the museum and uses his skills to protect its inhabitants and maintain order. The space dog meets the Guardians of the Galaxy when they arrive at the Museum of Knowhere. Impressed by his nature and skills, they recruit him as a team member. He offers assistance and knowledge, helping the team in their missions and battles.
