From Chancellor to Sleuth: Merkel’s New Chapter
Angela Merkel, the iconic former Chancellor of Germany, has taken on a new role as a small-town detective in the light-hearted German TV series “Miss Merkel.” The show, starring celebrated actress Katharina Thalbach, reimagines Merkel as a super sleuth solving crimes in northern Italy after her retirement.
In the show, Merkel, bored with retirement, embarks on a new career
Styled in Merkel’s trademark cropped hair and collarless jackets, Thalbach channels the former chancellor’s look as she tackles unresolved cases. The series, which will debut on Italy’s RAI, offers a humorous take on Agatha Christie’s beloved Miss Marple. In the show, Merkel, bored with retirement, embarks on a new career in forensic inquiry, a nod to her real-life doctorate in chemistry.
The trailer has already generated significant buzz, with scenes of Merkel using a magnifying glass and dodging a falling object from a church tower. The attention on social media includes a playful comment from Amanda Knox and calls for the show to be aired in the UK. British historian Francis Young even suggested a similar series featuring former UK Prime Minister Theresa May.
Inspiration from literature and TV
Based on the bestselling book by David Safier, the series draws inspiration from both Merkel’s enigmatic public persona and classic TV detective Columbo. Safier told The Irish Times that Merkel’s well-known but private life allowed creative freedom to craft a friendly, underestimated heroine, much like Miss Marple.
While the real Merkel famously feared dogs, her TV counterpart owns a pug named Helmut, a playful twist on a character previously named Putin in Safier’s books. This detail recalls a 2007 incident where Russian leader Vladimir Putin brought his black labrador to a meeting with Merkel, adding an extra layer of humor and intrigue to the series.
