After the movie entered the post-production phase, Warner Bros. and DC Comics formally canceled the release of “Batgirl”. It will no longer debut in theatres or on any other digital platforms, including HBO Max. Warner Bros. has also canceled “Scoob!: Holiday Haunt,” the sequel to the 2020 movie “Scoob!” in addition to “Batgirl.” There is no official statement from senior staff on shelving the big projects.
The funding for “Batgirl” was intended for HBO Max in-home viewing rather than a significant international theatrical release. As per Variety, studio insiders insist the decision to shelve ‘Batgirl’ was not driven by the quality of the film or the commitment of the filmmakers, but by the desire for the studio`s slate of DC features to be at a blockbuster scale.
Warner Bros call quits on the release of Batgirl
After scraping the films, Warner Bros released a statement, “The decision to not release Batgirl reflects our leadership’s strategic shift as it relates to the DC universe and HBO Max.
Leslie Grace is an incredibly talented actor and this decision is not a reflection of her performance. We are incredibly grateful to the filmmakers of Batgirl and Scoob! Holiday Haunt and their respective casts and we hope to collaborate with everyone again in the near future.”
The film was set to be one of DC Comics’ most anticipated releases to date for the HBO Max streaming service. It starred Leslie Grace as the title character and also included a cameo from Michael Keaton as Batman. With several similarities to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the DC Extended Universe has been a contentious topic for fans for a while. While the earlier HBO Max scheduled release of Blue Beetle persists to keep moving toward a theatre release, Warner Bros., Discovery even now has a slate of DCEU movies coming out. It includes eagerly anticipated movies Black Adam, Shazam! Fury of the Gods, and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.
