This is historically significant. For the first time in eight years, another film company has surpassed Disney. Universal Studios surpassed Disney as the most successful film studio in 2023, earning approximately $4.907 billion.
The studios released up to 24 films, a couple of which went on to become blockbusters. Oppenheimer, a World War II epic directed by Christopher Nolan, as well as the horror thriller M3GAN and The Super Mario Bros. Movie, are among the titles distributed by Universal.
With the release of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, and 15 more films, Disney fell to second place in previous years. In 2023, Disney had fewer releases than Universal. In 2023, Disney earned a total of $4.827 billion.
Disney also stated in a statement that it still owns the most titles in the top ten list, four of the highest-grossing global releases, and three of the biggest domestic releases.
Barbie ($1.4 billion), Warner Bros. and Universal’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie ($1.3 billion), and Oppenheimer ($950 million) took the first three slots. Disney’s Marvel superhero flicks had a disappointing year in 2023, dropping the company to second place.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was their greatest money-minter of the year, grossing $845 million.
