It was a huge day for Indian filmmakers and filmgoers since not one, but two domestic films established a name for themselves at the Academy Awards 2023. Tourists have begun flocking to Tamil Nadu, the state portrayed in the Oscar-winning film The Elephant Whisperers, amid a surge in interest in Indian films globally. As the title says, the film depicts the human-animal link and what we can do if we work together with nature. Visitors have begun to visit the Madumalai Theppakadu elephant camp in order to meet the young elephant ‘Raghu’ from the video.
For those who are unfamiliar, the plot of The Elephant Whisperers centres around a family who adopts two orphaned baby elephants in Tamil Nadu’s Mudumalai Tiger Reserve. The documentary was directed by Kartiki Gonsalves and produced by Guneet Monga
On seeing the elephants, one tourist quoted said, “It is such a great moment. It’s a pleasure to be here. The elephant is my favourite animal and the fact that the film won an Oscar does make me delighted and excited.” Another foreign tourist said, “I am from London, we visited here and got to know that two baby elephants from here won an Oscar last night. It is nice to see them, and I really enjoyed seeing them. Elephants are my favourite animal. I am very lucky to see them today.” The Oscar-winning documentary was directed by Kartiki Gonsalves and produced by Guneet Monga, the two ladies walked onto the Oscars platform to accept their golden statuettes.
