Spider-Man: No Way Home reached the $1 billion mark at the global box office on Sunday, less than two weeks after its premiere. It is the first time a film to surpass the $1 billion mark since 2019. The most recent film to do so was “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker,” which was released in December 2019. Sony and Disney’s Marvel Studios worked together on the film, which has since become Sony’s highest-grossing film in US box office history, Sony Pictures Entertainment confirmed on Sunday.
The only other films to attain the $1 billion mark in lesser time were “Avengers: Endgame” (2019) and “Avengers: Infinity War” (2018)
The third installment of the sequel stars Tom Holland as the titular superhero, who combats various villains from the Marvel multiverse. The only other films to attain the $1 billion mark in lesser time were Marvel’s “Avengers: Endgame” (2019) and “Avengers: Infinity War” (2018), which did so in 5 days and 11 days, respectively. According to the studio, the superhero hit has grossed $467.3 million in North American theatres and an extra $587.1 million in international markets. The film easily dominated the three-day festival weekend in North America, grossing approximately $81 million from 4,336 locations in the United States and Canada.
These numbers are mind-boggling: Experts
“What this represents is quite mind-boggling,” senior media analyst Paul Dergarabedian told CNN Business. “These numbers would be very impressive in the pre-pandemic era, but for ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ to sprint to a billion dollars in this marketplace is hard to wrap your mind around.” “Sing 2,” an animated musical starring Matthew McConaughey and Reese Witherspoon, debuted at No. 2 on the domestic box office, grossing $23.76 million from 3,892 theatres in the United States and Canada.
