Spencer trailer was released ahead of its November release. The film, starring Kristen Stewart, follows Diana Spencer, better known as Princess Diana, as she deals with the approaching dissolution of her marriage to Prince Charles.
It’s Christmas Eve, and the entire family will be spending time together. For the time being, the couple’s marital problems are just rumors.
Diana shows in late, as if to make a point, and decides to keep a stiff upper lip, as the British are famous for. She calms herself to the fact that it’s only been three days.
Take a look at the Spencer Trailer
The trailer promises a dramatic, focused, and complex portrayal of Princess Diana. She has been reduced in the popular consciousness to either pure evil or the absolute epitome of goodness. As is always the case, the truth lies somewhere in the middle.
Spencer appears to be an engrossing peek into the mind of a woman feeling resentful. The powerful royal family victimized her, as most agree.
The film does not claim to be an all-encompassing Diana story. It is a good thing because there are already too many of those. Stewart is just stunning in the role. She seemed to be nailing Diana’s enigmatic accent.
The film, directed by Pablo Larraín and written by Steven Knight, has garnered overwhelmingly good reviews, with Stewart’s performance also being singled out for praise.
The film also scored 91 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. The critical consensus reads, “Spencer can frustrate with its idiosyncratic depiction of its subject’s life, but Kristen Stewart’s finely modulated performance anchors the film’s flights of fancy.”
The official synopsis reads, “The marriage of Princess Diana and Prince Charles has long since grown cold. Though rumors of affairs and a divorce abound, peace is ordained for the Christmas festivities at the Queen’s Sandringham Estate. There’s eating and drinking, shooting and hunting. Diana knows the game. But this year, things will be profoundly different. SPENCER is an imagining of what might have happened during those few fateful days.”
