As she continues her career in the entertainment industry, she reflects on how far she’s come. As an only child from Miami, FL, she began performing at local talent shows which her mother hoped would overcome her shyness. As time went on, she began winning awards and really enjoyed doing local plays, eventually signing with a local talent agent where she booked modeling gigs and worked on local commercials.
When asked, if she’s particularly excited about any new projects coming out, she replies, “I really enjoy the projects with very specific perspectives, stories and authentic voices that haven’t really been heard in such a way in the past. I’m seeing that a lot this awards season as I go to the FYC events. And though there may be room for improvement, I’m also happy to see a lot of realistic instead of forced diversity (be that disability, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, age, etc.) that really reflects the world the world we live in. The challenge is a given, but It’s an exciting time to be an actor.”
As a pescatarian, Lumbly is preparing for this upcoming year by hitting the gym a little harder and increasing the fresh raw fruits and veggies. Of course, she’ll be continuing scene study work over the holidays. She is also looking to add to representation team. The projects that she hopes to be pitched for would include those in the sci-fi/fantasy, animated and drama (especially historical) type genres. Though, she would find it fun to try her hand at comedy.
Most recently, Amira did some voice work on NBC’s “Fresh Prince’ reboot “Bel-Air”. Previously, she has had supporting roles in ABC’s Pretty Little Little Liars, a Yahoo! TV web series called “Sketchy”. Along with several Indie films including “Baptized by the Weekend” and “Lemon Drop”.
Amira is the daughter of a Jamaican American mother who is a professional singer and teacher, and her American father in Miami, Florida. She was raised and home-schooled by her mother from kindergarten to 8th grade and lived between Miami, FL, West Africa (Ghana and Senegal) and Saint Paul, Montana throughout her teens. She is the niece of actors Carl Lumbly and Vonetta McGee. And is a graduate of Dodge College of Film and Media Arts at Chapman University.
Lumbly currently resides in Los Angeles, CA.
