Peppa Pig makes history by introducing its first same-sex couple

Popular children’s show Peppa Pig created history by introducing its first same-sex couple. Here’s everything you need to know.

All about Peppa Pig’s first same-sex couple

Since its debut in 2004, Peppa Pig is one of the most watched shows by pre-schoolers across the world. The show features titular characters enjoying their everyday life and activities. The series also features Peppa’s friends—Danny Dog, Penny Polar Bear, and Suzi Sheep. On Monday, the episode titled “Families” featured the characters drawing a picture of their families. Penny drew two female polar bears in dresses alongside the trio before explaining her sketch.

“I’m Penny Polar Bear. I live with my mummy and my other mummy. One mummy is a doctor and one mummy cooks spaghetti. I love spaghetti,” said Penny. This is the first time that a lesbian couple is featured on a kid’s show.

Netizens loved the new LGBTQ-friendly move. “No one talking abt for Peppa pig now has two lesbian polar bears? The move comes after Thomas & Friends, another popular children’s TV show announced the introduction of its first autistic character. The cherry on top is the autistic character, Bruno the Brake Car will be voiced by Elliott Garcia. Garcia is a nine-year-old autistic actor. Children’s shows have a huge effect on their growth and development. Last year, a Wall Street Journal revealed the presence of “the Peppa effect“. According to the report, American kids watching the show during the pandemic started picking up English accents and using more British phrases.
